Mike Turtur Changes
The bit by Devon Street South where you have to pop out onto Victoria Parade sucks. That the path guides you to an annoying designed-for-pedestrians crossing is an irritation that is easily surmounted by having a squiz at the map beforehand.
I rode the Mike Turtur Bikeway this weekend. It's mostly good, and it's obvious that it's getting attention from the Powers That Be. The bit by Devon Street South where you have to pop out onto Victoria Parade sucks. That the path guides you to an annoying designed-for-pedestrians crossing is an irritation that is easily surmounted by having a squiz at the map beforehand (after South Road, stay on Glengyle Terrace until Beckman Street and cross at the level crossing there).
For me, the most disruptive bits of the Mike Turtur Bikeway are the main-road crossings: South, Marion, Cross, and Morphett Roads. They really wreck the flow of the ride, even if you manage to time the crossings to happen at the same time as a tram, they are weavy and dodgy and not very nice.
DIT to the rescue! Read about the plans here.
These four crossings are going to get tram, bike, and pedestrian overpasses. It's to make life easier for the people who drive, but it will make things better for cyclists and pedestrians too.
It does mean that the Mike Turtur Bikeway will be basically out of action for six months or so, and the crossings for the Main Four will suck even more during this time, but I think it will be worth it for the benefits.
